Summer Letter to Parents
With summer fast approaching, families are filling in their calendars with swim lessons, vacation trips, camps and special outings. For those days in which you are looking for something fun and educational, enjoy one of the items from the summer activities listed below. Have a fun and safe summer!
 
  • Make a poster of summer safety tips with you child.
  • Read a newspaper article about the environment and discuss it with your child.
  • Have your child look for bugs. How many different kinds of bugs can he or she find? What size are they? What color?
  • Make a board game with your child.
  • Have your child put an ice cube outside. How long until it melts? Until it evaporates?
  • Take a picnic and have a story time.
  • Look for letters of the alphabet on objects around the house.
  • Watch for numbers in TV programs and commercials.
  • Teach your child a new skill, like setting the table.
  • Help your child locate your town or places you plan on visiting (or would like to visit) on a map.
  • Check out and read books from the library.
  • Include your child in planning meals and shopping for the items.
  • Create stationary that can be used for future thank you notes.
  • Watch the moon and record its size and shape onto a calendar.
  • Talk about fire safety and make an escape plan.
  • Discover when things were invented and make an Invention Timeline.
  • Create a timeline of your life.
  • Show your child how and when to dial 911.
  • Make a grocery list that fits within a set budget.
  • Make a decorative collage with items from around the home (string, buttons, magazine clippings, pebbles, rocks).
  • Hide a treasure and make a map for your child to find it or have them create a treasure map.
  • Sort and count money within a money jar.
  • Make a time capsule with your child.
  • Have your child be a pet detective and observe an animal.
  • Keep a science journal.
  • Turn off the TV. for family reading time
  • Write a poem.
  • Make a personalized bookmark with your child.
  • Use a ruler or tape measure to measure 10-20 outside items (blades of grass, flowers, rocks, crack in the ground)
