K Info Night held Jan. 5, register by March 1

Parents and guardians of five-year-old children are encouraged to attend Forest Hills’ Kindergarten Information Night on Jan. 5 from 6 p.m-7:30 p.m. at Nagel Middle School, 1500 Nagel Road.

The evening will feature overviews of kindergarten curriculum, developmental readiness, kindergarten readiness, attendance areas, schedules and the registration process. Principals and Central Office administrators will also be available to answer questions and help parents compare all-day and half-day kindergarten options, both of which the district will offer for the first time during the 2017-18 school year.

Parents can then register students for kindergarten in Forest Hills School District beginning Jan. 6.  Kindergarten registration will occur online at foresthills.edu/registration and is encouraged by March 1.

Once a parent completes the online registration process, they should attend a Kindergarten Round-Up event to provide required documents for registration: parent/guardian driver’s license, child’s current immunization records, child’s official birth certificate, custody papers (if applicable), and proof of residence (mortgage, deed, rental/lease agreement). Those registering for all-day kindergarten must also provide a $75 deposit (check) for the program.

Round-Up events will be held Feb. 16 from 4 p.m.-7:30 p.m. and Feb. 17 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Parents need to only attend one Round-Up event.  Both events will occur at the student’s school of attendance. To find a child’s school of attendance, visit foresthills.edu/registration.

It is preferred that Round-Up events are parent-only events to help expedite the registration process and because students do not need to be present to complete the registration process.

Parents who cannot make the February Round-Up events should complete the online registration and then call Debbie Conover, registrar, at 231-3600 to make an appointment to provide the required documentation.

FHSD recommends that children be five-years-old on or before August 1, 2017 to register for kindergarten.  However, for the 2017-18 school year only, students who are five-years-old by Sept. 30, 2017 may also enroll.

In 2017-18, Forest Hills will offer both half-day and all-day kindergarten options; the 2014 bond issue allowed for additional classroom space to accommodate all-day kindergarten in Forest Hills.

Tuition for the all-day program is $3,000 and will offset the additional operating costs and defer operating costs from taxpayers. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify.  Those who need financial assistance should contact Mike Broadwater, assistant superintendent, at 231-3600 or mikebroadwater@foresthills.edu.

Per state law, the half-day kindergarten program will continue to be offered tuition-free and the state will provide partial funding for a half-day kindergarten program.
