For more than 30 years, Forest Hills School District has offered a three-day, overnight, outdoor educational experience to all fifth-grade students at the YMCA Camp Kern (in Oregonia, Ohio).
Camp Kern helps students develop a sensitivity and sense of responsibility towards natural resources through direct, purposeful activities in an outdoor environment. Using natural sciences and local history interpretation as primary vehicles to achieve this goal, natural resource concern is developed through experiences in other areas of the curriculum such as language arts, social studies, mathematics, art, music and recreation. Major learning units focus on: field and forest, pond study, fossils and pioneer life.
This adventure will also provide experiences to help students develop community responsibilities. Students sleep in cabins and eat in the dining hall together. Students develop responsibility as they care for their own equipment, the dining room and the entire camp area. Forest Hills staff, Camp Kern staff, and Forest Hills high school students serve as teachers, leaders and counselors during the camp experience. Forest Hills provides an onsite nurse and/or health aide for each session.
Students will leave from Nagel Middle School at 7:30 a.m. on the dey of departure and return to Nagel at 2:45 p.m. on the final day
