According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Sleep Foundation, later middle and high school start times benefit student academic success and social and emotional wellness. Because of this, during the past several months, Forest Hills School District has explored options regarding school start times for grades 7-12. After extensive consideration of many factors including leading research on healthy school start times, transportation routes (FHSD, Great Oaks Career Campus, parochial, etc.), and community feedback, the district will present the following instructional schedule recommendations to the Board of Education for consideration:
- Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, Turpin High School and Anderson High School students will begin school at 8 a.m. and dismiss at 2:40 p.m.
- Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, Nagel Middle School students will start school at 8:30 a.m. and dismiss at 3:15 p.m.
- Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, all elementary schools (Ayer, Maddux, Mercer, Sherwood, Summit, Wilson) will begin school at 9:15 a.m. and dismiss at 3:45 p.m.
The Board will consider the recommendations during its April 23 regular meeting at 7 p.m. at Nagel Middle School, 1500 Nagel Road. Finalized school start times for the 2018-19 school year will be officially communicated in May.
