Grades K-6 Poppy Day
05/24/18 11:00 AM
- 01:00 PM
This Memorial Day, students in Forest Hills are giving back to those who gave so much by serving in military branches across the country.
On May 24, students in all Forest Hills elementary schools will participate in Poppy Day with members of American Legion Post 318. During this event, students will visit with members of the Legion and participate in a donation drive to support the American Legion. By donating spare change, students will receive a bright red, artificial poppy to wear in honor of the sacrifice made by veterans across the country.
After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe and quickly became a symbol of the sacrifices made by Americans and allied service members around the world. National Poppy Day broadens a tradition that dates back to the American Legion Auxiliary’s first National Convention in the early 1920s when the red poppy was adopted as The American Legion Family’s memorial flower.
Nearly 3.5 million American Legion Auxiliary poppies were distributed last year, raising $2.1 million for veterans.
