May 11th, 2019 will mark the tenth annual Forest Hills 5K (FH5K).  Each year 2,000 participants run or walk in this fun-filled family event and over the past 9 years, the FH5K has raised $325,000 for the Forest Hills Foundation for Education.  All proceeds go to fund programs that benefit Forest Hills School District students.

The FH5K is recognized as one of Anderson Township’s largest community events and the partnership of local businesses is one of the keys to its success. Over 150 businesses participate as sponsors or have booths at the post-race festival.

“The Forest Hills School District is immensely grateful for the Forest Hills Foundation and the great work it does to support FHSD teachers and students,” said Superintendent Scot Prebles.  “The FH5K is an outstanding example of the strong connection the district has with the community, and we look forward to celebrating the 10th year of this great event on May 11th.”

The FH5K was founded by Beth Davis and Jenny Nayak. As running partners, the two often discussed how they wished kids would be more active; they decided to create an event that would encourage that activity and the FH5K was born. They have chaired the race for the last nine years and this year will be their last.

Davis says, “We are very grateful for the opportunities that this event has given us, our schools and the Anderson Township/Newtown community.  It has fostered collaboration between so many groups and shown us the true passion of our community.”

“It’s awesome that something that started out as a great way to get kids moving has turned into such a positive event that brings everyone together,” Nayak said. “We have been blessed with help from dedicated volunteers that help prepare for race day as well as coach our running clubs; it really is a team effort,” she continued.

Over 500 students begin training for the FH5K in March by participating in school running clubs; some can only run a hundred yards at the beginning of the training but by the end, most can complete the entire 3.2 miles of the race.  Their sense of accomplishment is great as they run the course that begins and ends at Nagel Middle School. The race starts at 8:30am.

In collaboration with Anderson Township’s Mental Health committee, this year’s post-race festival will highlight mental wellness resources within the community. In addition to race sponsors, school booths and restaurants, local organizations that offer mental health services will be present at the post-race festival. The festival, which runs from 9am to 11:30am, also includes food, music, a kid’s fun run for children six and under and a mascot race.
