From a student’s first experience holding a paintbrush to stepping into the spotlight on stage, the visual and performing arts are a significant part of receiving a holistic education. FHSD’s visual and performing arts courses of study outline key skills identified in our Portrait of a Learner. Through elementary art classes, advanced visual arts, robust music and theatre programs and more, students understand critical concepts that help them become critical thinkers, empathetic communicators, creative problem solvers, engaged collaborators and adaptable learners.

The Curriculum Up Close series focuses on one core subject each month to spotlight the unique learning that happens within them. December spotlights the visual and performing arts. Check out some of the many opportunities provided to elementary and secondary students that allow them to explore and pursue their creative expressions.

Elementary Art Class

Mrs. Pinto introduced her second grade art class at Summit Elementary to the term “proportion” in December. After putting the finishing touches on a previous project at the start of class, students switched gears and began to explore the concept of proportion by drawing snowmen. Mrs. Pinto led second graders through a step-by-step drawing of a snowman, carefully explaining how proportion plays an important role when creating a sketch. This lesson is helping students form skills like critical thinking and engaged collaboration.

High School Visual Arts

Both Anderson and Turpin High Schools offer a robust selection of visual arts courses. From  intro-level courses all the way through AP Drawing, AP 3-D Art and Design and more, students are able to explore their creativity through a variety of mediums. FHSD high schools offer courses ranging from sculpture and ceramics to photography and film, providing opportunities for students to express their voices, gain a healthy self-esteem and grow as lifelong learners.

Opportunities even extend into digital media. Photography, digital imaging and film allow for exploration in more modern mediums. The Media Athletics Collaborative also offers a unique experience to upperclassmen, integrating media arts with athletics and the business of sports marketing. Students create incredible visual pieces that have a hand in business and marketing.

Theatre Programs

FHSD’s theatre programs at Anderson and Turpin High Schools regularly put on high-quality performances throughout the school year. Alongside our performing arts curriculum, these organizations help enrich students’ educational experiences, promoting creativity and artistic expression.

Past performances that Anderson and Turpin have put on together include “Lord of the Flies,” “Chicago” and “The Great Gatsby.” The individual theatre programs also put on their own shows that dazzle audiences. This past fall, AHS performed "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and THS put on "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."

Performing Arts Programs

FHSD consistently offers high-quality performing arts programs across grade levels. The district is regularly recognized with The NAMM Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education designation, which is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to all students.

Beginning in fifth grade, students have the opportunity to pursue in-depth musical experiences in band, choir or orchestra that expands their learning. Through these programs, as well as theatre, students develop skills in leadership, collaboration, communication and self-expression. There is a unique set of experiences that a strong education in performing arts can provide in a way no other subject can model.

With the wrap up of the first semester, December was host to concerts galore at all FHSD schools. Visual arts students showcased their talents with friends, family and loved ones before the winter break. Check out the photos below of some of the concerts and performances they put on.
