Curriculum Up Close is your chance to get an inside look at Forest Hills classrooms and see the lessons students are learning, the skills they are developing and lifelong learners they are becoming. Our teachers and staff work tirelessly to create and implement memorable learning experiences for students to stay engaged and feel empowered to excel.

FHSD’s commitment to authentically engaging students in learning opportunities and preparing them to be future-ready graduates is demonstrated through our Courses of Study. These curriculum documents are thoughtfully designed and regularly reviewed by FHSD staff to outline learning goals and guiding materials. This approach helps ensure that students and teachers have the tools they need to excel. Lessons are also aligned with the characteristics of the district’s Portrait of a Learner: critical thinker, empathetic communicator, creative problem solver, engaged collaborator, and adaptable learner.

FHSD’s Curriculum Up Close series showcases a different core subject monthly to share a look inside classrooms and the activities, lessons and content students are learning. April dives into Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) as well as Business & Marketing.

Ms. Kincaid - Global Foods at Anderson High School

Ms. Kincaid’s Global Foods classes at Anderson High School are regularly cooking and serving up delicious dishes - one of the latest being Mexican Street Corn. Students chopped, measured, sauteed and cleaned up their stations all while working together. The kitchen was full of engaged collaborators and adaptable learners. After the final wipe of their cleanup, students enjoyed their dip to measure their success and celebrate all the skills they are accumulating! Through experiences like this, high school students are building foundations for life literacy and preparing for optimal and sustainable living.

Ms. Plunkett - Fashion Design at Turpin High School

Fashion Design students in Ms. Plunkett’s classes at Turpin High School have been constructing plush dogs. Using a pattern and a detail-oriented approach, students cut out their pieces and hand stitched them together. Their precision and patience are helping them develop critical skills for the future. As part of FHSD’s Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum, Fashion Design helps equip students with a foundation for life literacy education, providing opportunities that allow them to become successful career-life managers and contributing members of society.

Mr. Hoover - Business Management at Turpin High School

Seniors in Mr. Hoover’s Business Management class at Turpin High School have been accumulating a wide variety of skillsets through internships. From finance and tech support to social media and sales, these Spartans are synthesizing classroom knowledge with real-world experience. In class, they presented what they have learned, the challenges they have faced, their assigned tasks and responsibilities, and more. Many internships have taken place in external companies, whereas some students have had the opportunity to work with in-house groups, including the Turpin athletic training staff and the Turpin athletic department.

Through this presentation project, business students are also learning about using Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool. Mr. Hoover took students’ written internship reports and used AI generators to convert them into slideshow presentations. Students were shocked to see that AI couldn’t produce better work than what they would expect of themselves. As a result, they refined the generated work and better understood how to use AI as a tool rather than a replacement for their work.

The internship experiences in Business Management are helping students develop critical skills, applying what they have learned from Mr. Hoover to real-world situations, including how to navigate the workforce with the presence of AI.
