Curriculum Up Close: Health, Wellness and Physical Education

Jun 2, 2026

Through the Curriculum Up Close article series, you can explore Forest Hills classrooms to observe the lessons, skill development and growth of students as they become lifelong learners. Our dedicated educators and staff strive to provide impactful learning experiences that keep students engaged and empowered to achieve excellence.

FHSD demonstrates its dedication to providing authentic, engaging learning opportunities and preparing students for the future through our Courses of Study. These curriculum guides are meticulously crafted and frequently updated by staff to define educational objectives and provide essential resources, ensuring both teachers and students are equipped for success. Every lesson aligns with the FHSD Portrait of a Learner, fostering traits such as critical thinking, empathetic communication, creative problem-solving, engaged collaboration and adaptability.

Each month, the Curriculum Up Close series highlights a different core subject. The month of May focuses on Health, Wellness and Physical Education.

Wellness

FHSD is committed to supporting student wellness and meeting the social, behavioral and emotional needs of students in our school community. We believe that every student can Flourish in the Forest! For this, FHSD created and adopted a Wellness Course of Study designed to promote and nurture the mental well-being, as well as physical well-being of students. Through regular wellness events, valuable community partnerships and excellence in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and more, FHSD students can learn in environments where they feel secure, valued and able to take risks.

Health

FHSD’s Health curriculum approaches personal health and wellness that emphasizes individual choice and responsibility for well-being. Since the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce does not have State Standards for Health, unlike other academic content areas, FHSD’s curriculum is aligned to the Ohio Revised Code requirements for health education and places an importance on the invaluable partnership of families in health education. We believe parents and families have the primary responsibility to assist their children in developing values about these topics. Health education in FHSD addresses the physical, mental, emotional and social components of health and equips students with the knowledge, skills and awareness necessary to make responsible wellness decisions.

Physical Education

Physical Education in FHSD helps give students the knowledge, skills and attitudes to enjoy a lifetime of physical activity. As physical health is a piece of FHSD’s overall wellness curriculum, PE provides students with opportunities that promote a desire for physical fitness that also develops the ability to interact with others in a positive and successful manner. As students develop and maintain healthy relationships with others, self-confidence and social skills are enhanced. FHSD’s physical education teachers create unique opportunities that all students can enjoy and pursue, creating connections in which students can build enthusiasm and understand the importance of consistent physical activity.
