FHSD to Seek Alternative Uses for Anderson Pool, Continue Long-Term Planning for District Aquatics
Based on all of the available information and investigations into the Anderson High School pool facility, including independent reports from multiple pool construction and architectural design companies, the Board of Education is in agreement that this particular space, located in the AHS basement, is more appropriate for a different use moving forward. The Board does not believe that replacing or repairing the pool facility as it exists today would be the best decision for students, families or the larger community.
At its Regular Meeting on Monday, June 29, the Board of Education directed the district administration to research different ways to fill in the pool and repurpose the space to benefit students district-wide. Permanent changes to the facility will involve future public discussion and Board approval.
The Board recognizes that this change, considering the long and celebrated history of the pool, may bring a sense of loss to some members of our community. During its deliberations, the Board carefully reflected on the messages and input shared by the public. Ultimately, with the current uncertainty surrounding potential cuts to state public education funding, the multi-million dollar cost could not be justified.
“Throughout the detailed conversations, tours, public discussions and internal reviews that have taken place this year, the Board has been diligent about gathering all available information and focused on doing what we believe is best for students and what makes the most financial sense for our school district,” Board President Wendy Strickler said. “As the administration begins looking into potential alternative uses for this part of Anderson High School, we are excited about what the future of this space could look like and the Board is committed to engaging with students, staff and community members to develop a creative plan moving forward.”
FHSD is proud to have an existing aquatic facility at Turpin High School that offers an opportunity for students at Nagel, Anderson and Turpin to swim and dive on a district campus. While this has been a successful location in recent years, the Board continues to explore future options to serve the district aquatic programs.
The current plan to seek alternative uses for the Anderson pool space comes after seven years of deliberation, research and planning that spans multiple Boards and district administrators. The Board of Education is currently participating in community planning meetings that have included discussions on a variety of topics, including potential pool facilities. As the district plans strategically for future opportunities, any decision must carefully consider how to support the best interests of students and the broader community.
Updates on next steps and information about opportunities to provide feedback in the process to review options for the Anderson pool facility will be shared at public meetings of the Board of Education and will be communicated on www.foresthills.edu.
