Update on the District Natatorium

The following statement was shared with staff and families of Nagel Middle School, Anderson High School and Turpin High School on Monday, August 31, 2026 at approximately 5:45 p.m. The message provides information about cleaning efforts of the district natatorium at Turpin High School, which is utilized by the swim and dive programs at these three schools.

One of the most important responsibilities we have as a school district is to provide students, staff and visitors with a safe, healthy and welcoming environment in all of our buildings. When potential health or safety issues come up in our facilities, Forest Hills School District always follows the necessary precautions and works quickly to address those challenges.

I am writing to inform you of recent developments regarding our district natatorium at Turpin High School.

The district has been working this summer with an outside company to replace the air handling unit in the Turpin natatorium. During a recent walk through of the space, our team observed unusually high humidity levels and noticed what appeared to be microbial growth on certain portions of the walls and ceiling. We immediately brought in environmental quality professionals to examine the space and provide guidance on appropriate next steps. Their evaluation confirmed that the issue will require professional cleaning, sanitization and remediation. This additional work will be covered by the district’s insurance provider.

It is important to know that the natatorium operates on an entirely separate air circulation system, which does not connect to any other areas of Turpin High School. Preliminary testing conducted outside of the immediate pool area indicated air quality levels within normal standards, and we will continue to test air quality levels in nearby areas to ensure there are no safety concerns. Additional tests will be performed in the natatorium upon the completion of the remediation efforts to ensure air quality levels are back to appropriate levels.

The natatorium has been closed to students, staff and visitors for the duration of the HVAC work that has been underway this summer, and the space will remain closed while crews conduct the necessary cleaning procedures. We are working carefully to be sure all best practices are followed and the space receives the appropriate attention to make sure it can be reopened safely.

We are thankful that the work is expected to be completed in early October, prior to the start of OHSAA-sanctioned swim and dive practices on October 23.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through these unexpected challenges. The health and safety of our students, staff and visitors remains our highest priority, and we will continue to keep our school community informed as the project progresses.
