Also recognized during the meeting were the Sherwood and Summit Design Lab programs. Students in the fifth and sixth grade at both schools participated in a months-long design project that involved selecting a site, identifying a client, accounting for sustainability topics and actually building 3D models of their work. The purpose of the program is to introduce concepts related to architecture, engineering, construction and design to students in grades Kindergarten to 8. Sherwood extended learning opportunity (ELO) teacher Anita Hughes presented information about the program and also recognized Summit ELO teacher Beth Francis who led the efforts for the Bees.

Teams from both schools were selected to advance to a city-wide competition, with teams from Summit earning special recognition awards at the event held at Newport On the Levee. The competition involved students presenting their designs and answering questions from professionals in related industries.

Board Shout Outs

Board members took a few moments near the beginning of the meeting to congratulate all graduating seniors in the class of 2026 and wish them the best of luck as they embark on their next adventure.

All five board members recently passed an online test related to knowledge of Ohio educational law, governance policy and school board best practices, earning the Aptitude Award recognition from the Ohio School Boards Association. The Aptitude Award requires a board member to demonstrate an understanding and comprehension of a variety of board governance skills based on six leadership areas: vision, accountability, policy, community engagement, relationships and advocacy.

Anderson High School Pool Discussion and Update

The Board held a detailed discussion related to the Anderson High School pool facility. You can click the following link to watch the full discussion, which begins at 1:07:45 during the meeting livestream. The district published a separate web article on this topic and the direction provided by the Board of Education, and you can click here to read the full story. Please refer to these links for more comprehensive information about the nuances of the Board’s discussion.

Ultimately, the Board of Education directed the district administration to research different ways to fill in the pool and repurpose the space to benefit students district-wide. Permanent changes to the facility will involve future public discussion and Board approval. This new direction for the pool space comes after a careful review of all of the available information and past investigations into the facility, including independent reports from multiple pool construction and architectural design companies. The Board of Education is in agreement that this particular space, located in the AHS basement, is more appropriate for a different use moving forward. The Board does not believe that replacing or repairing the pool facility as it exists today would be the best decision for students, families or the larger community.

The discussion covered a wide range of topics related to the pool facility including historical data, community feedback and public comments, the existing shared pool space at Turpin High School, estimated costs for a variety of scenarios and more.

District Update on Meeting Practices

Treasurer Alana Cropper provided a brief update on the structure of the consent agenda for the June meeting. All of the items will continue to be included on the meeting agenda with relevant attachments to provide the public an opportunity to review all of the business items in advance of each meeting. This has been the practice for multiple years, and this is not expected to change for routine business items.
